Classic Chocolate Milkshake Recipe: Only 2 Ingredients
Last Updated on February 8, 2024 by TheFarmChicken
I feel like as you read this recipe you will go one of two ways. One you’ll love it and be mind blown about these two ingredients or two you will be like “Yes, I have known about this for years and it’s good.” My siblings and I grew up eating chocolate shakes this way, and it is arguably better than chocolate syrup, milk and ice cream. It is also super easy so that makes it even better! Let’s learn what the 2 ingredients are in this Classic Chocolate Milkshake Recipe: Only 2 Ingredients.
Growing up we used to have these as a treat at home. When we were young, my parents would scoop out some vanilla ice cream into our little Tupperware cups and pour chocolate milk over it! Yes, chocolate milk! We would carefully mix it up (its so easy to spill if you aren’t careful) and enjoy. It’s chocolatey and creamy almost like a frosty from Wendy’s if you ever have had one of those. The perfect treat and so good with French fries! This is the best way to make a great milkshake.
When I was pregnant with our first child, I would get morning sickness at night and this homemade milkshake recipe took care of the nausea! Maybe why my little one loves them so much!

The 2 Simple Ingredients you need:
Vanilla Ice Cream
Really any vanilla ice cream will do. We usually get a pail, usually it’s the best option for us. In our area Kemp’s is one of the best brands of vanilla ice cream but make sure to use whatever your favorite it.
If you wanted an even more chocolatey option, try chocolate ice cream!
Chocolate Milk
I don’t know if this is a thing in your family/friend group but for us there is a ranking of chocolate milk brands and in the upper Midwest chocolate milk is best made by Cass Clay Creamery. This is the only brand we buy when we want to get chocolate milk for a treat. Unless we are desperate then we will go for a different brand and will look for whole milk chocolate milk. Usually that is pretty good even when it isn’t Cass Clay. I’d love to hear in the comments what your favorite brand of chocolate milk is where you live!
We have been to California and Florida and my brother-in-law usually has to figure out which is the best chocolate milk available in the area.
Want a chocolate malt instead?
Simply add malt powder to your glass add the chocolate milk and stir. Then scoop in the ice cream and stir this all together until smooth! Top with whipped cream and a cherry if desired and you have a homemade chocolate malt!
Oreo Milkshake
Simply change the chocolate milk to whole white milk, mix the milk and ice cream together and then add 3 crushed up Oreo cookies to this.
Homemade Whipped Topping:
You can easily make homemade whipped topping. Here’s how:
- ¾ cup whipping cream or heavy cream, cold
- 2 T granulated sugar
- In a large bowl of a stand mixer, with the whisk attachment on high speed, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form.
- Next add the sugar to the heavy cream and mix in.
- Top your shake!
