Homemade Gift: Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix in a Jar
Last Updated on April 19, 2023 by TheFarmChicken
How fun! A homemade gift: chocolate chip cookie mix in a jar, it is both cute and delicious. This cookie mix in a jar includes enough dry ingredients to make 12 cookies – the perfect number of cookies for a treat for a friend. All they will need to make these cookies are the wet ingredients. 7 tablespoons butter (1 T. less than a stick of butter), a large egg and they can mix these up so fast in their own kitchen. There are few better things than the smell of freshly baked cookies…a gift in and of itself!
This is our favorite cookie recipe. We often make them in our house, and they are a big hit. Soft, chewy and generously sprinkled with chocolate chips! More often than not I have them stashed in the freezer for dessert after a meal or a quick snack. With Mother’s Day coming up I thought this would make a perfect gift for your mom! This Homemade Gift: Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix in a Jar, a set of pocket potholders and/or my favorite cookie scoop and you have a perfect present that is both unique and thoughtful. Handmade gifts are one of my favorite things!

Other reasons to gift Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix in a Jar:
- As a special holiday gift
- A birthday present
- A housewarming gift
- An addition to a meal brought to a friend
- Hostess Gift
- A gift for a teacher
So how do we make a Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix in a Jar? Let’s put one together!
What you will need:
- 1-quart jar – wide mouth jar works best – this is a pretty pink option
- A metal lid ring
- A funnel – not necessary but it is helpful
- A 6” x 6” fabric square – perfect opportunity to use a piece of scrap fabric – I just use scissors to cut out the square.
- Plastic Wrap
- Sandwich Bags – Fold top
- Most cookie mixes in a jar don’t put the sugar and chocolate chips in a separate bag but I like too so that you can beat the butter and sugars together separately. This makes for an all around better cookie.
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 white sugar, granulated
- 3/4 cup chocolate chips
- You can really use any type of chocolate chip you would like too. We like semi-sweet the best!
- Cute recipe card printable
- Free printable tag
Instructions to put the Chocolate chip cookie mix in a jar together:
- First you take your jar and funnel and measure out and combine flour, baking soda and salt. Place flour mixture in the bottom of the jar. This is your first layer.
- Now at this point a lot of people will just add the sugars in and the chocolate chips….I like being able to whip the butter and sugar together as I feel this gives the cookies a better texture. So this is where the fold top sandwich bags come in. Measure out your sugar and place it in one bag. Go ahead and slightly pack this down on the flour.
- Then in the next bag put the chocolate chips. You can then set this bag on top of the sugar bag.
- Once you have reached this point you can either hand write out the directions (see below) or print off the FREE printable that I have made up. Put this in the top of the jar.
- There are different ways you could close up/seal the jar. My favorite is to take plastic wrap and lay it on top of the jar, then the square of cute fabric and then screw on a metal jar ring. You could also add a ribbon bow or a twine bow to attach a gift tag too. I made a couple printable gift tags and they make a great personal touch. I would recommend printing them on cardstock paper (a thicker paper) to make them look even better!
When putting the dry ingredients together I was reminded of a saying I said as a child. When I was little, watching my mom measure the dry ingredients for cookies I would say “Some whites are white and some whites are whiter.” It’s a fun memory that I still look back on. I just remember at that point thinking to myself… not every white is the same shade.
The Recipe for The Chocolate Chip Cookies: you could hand write this on a 3×5 card or use the cute printable, just add to the top of the jar.
Ingredients Needed:
- 1 Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix in a Jar
- 7 T. butter, softened
- 1 large egg
Baking Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. First, in the bowl of a stand mixer or a large bowl, whip the butter for 2 minutes until light and fluffy. Next take the bag of chocolate chips and the bag of sugar out of the jar. Open the bag with the sugars and add that to the butter and mix for another 2 minutes. Add the large egg and beat this for another 2 minutes. After that is well incorporated you can now add the dry ingredients. Run the mixer on low and make sure not to overmix.
While the dry ingredients are being incorporated, add the chocolate chips. Mix until just incorporated- it only takes a little bit more time. DON’T overmix the cookie dough. Next, take a baking sheet and scoop the cookies onto the sheet. Flatten slightly and then bake for 12-14 minutes until just turning golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheet before removing to a wire rack to cool. You should get roughly 12 cookies.
This mix can be stored in a dark place for up to 3 months.
I hope you enjoy making and gifting this fun homemade diy gift!
