My Mom’s Calico Baked Bean Recipe
Last Updated on August 28, 2023 by TheFarmChicken
I love a good family recipe. Something that is worth passing down through the generations is worth sharing and treasuring. Today I am sharing with you my mom’s calico baked bean recipe.
I always remember these calico beans growing up as something that she would make for potluck at church. A lot of times it was either beans or scalloped potatoes. People enjoyed them. I can’t say I liked them that much when I was little but now, I really enjoy them. Even more so now that I have a greater understanding of how good pulses are for you! (Check out “The Scoop on Pulses”).
This is also a very simple recipe so it would be great for a busy weekday night. It is simple like a hotdish but something different if you are tired of hotdish all the time. My mom’s calico baked bean recipe calls for butter beans and we especially like the baby butter beans. I found not every store carries them but I would give them a try if you do find them!
Calico Baked Beans
Ingredients
- 1 lb Hamburger browned
- ¾ cup Ketchup
- ½ cup Brown sugar
- 2 T Vinegar
- 1 T Mustard
- 1 can 16 oz. Vegetarian baked beans not drained
- 1 can 15.5 oz. Butter beans drained – I like to use baby butter beans.
- 1 can 15.5 oz. Kidney beans drained
Instructions
- Mix all together in a 3 qt casserole dish and bake with the lid on at 325 degrees for 1 hour. Enjoy!
I like to serve them with cornbread or sourdough bread. It makes for a nutritious and filling meal. Baked beans are perfect for a cold winters’ night, a summer barbeque side…or just about anytime really.
Hope you enjoy!
